Community Art
We will start the week working with ARTS (A Reason to Survive) on beautification projects in the communities of National City. Then in small groups, students will occupy the underused spaces in the restrooms with positive messages and images. Finally, we will end the week visiting the Museum of Contemporary Art, sculpture installations along the bay front and grab lunch at Sea Port Village.

Art As Protest
Hector Tobar wrote in a recent New York Times article, “When a people see their humanity denied, art is a defense of that humanity.” Art, in its various forms, has for many years provided an outlet for resisting oppression, combating social norms and advocating for specific causes. In our intersession, we will explore several social movements throughout contemporary U.S. history and examine how these movements, as well as the time periods in which they occurred, have been captured by murals, fashion, music, and more! Join us for field trips, film-watching, critical analyses of lyrics and art pieces, and ultimately, creating posters of your own that capture a social movement of your choice.
